Plans for a state-of-the-art new fire station in West Norwood are to be unveiled to the public on Saturday.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) intends to relocate to a former doctor's surgery in Knight's Hill from its current station in Norwood Road.

The 1914 Grade II listed fire station is a protected building and cannot be suitably modernised.

LFB will be hosting an event at West Norwood library on Saturday to discuss its proposals for the new facilities.

Plans include space to house three fire engines, as opposed to the current two, more accommodation, and “community facilities” where residents can drop in to receive fire prevention advice.

There is no proposed date for when the fire station would be built or when a planning application would be submitted, according to the LFB.

A LFB spokesman said: “This is the very beginning of our consultation process. We want to discuss our plans with the community and hear any questions they may have.”

The location of the proposed fire station could be met with objections from local residents because it would be set in a residential area. It is also close to sheltered accommodation.

Although it would be in a larger building, the LFB spokesman said the new station was not intended to be “busier” and there were no plans for more fire engines.

Yet it would have the space to potentially house specialist equipment and fire engines, including improved breathing apparatus and specialist cutting equipment, if it decided to expand its operations in the future.

LFB representatives will be displaying the plans at West Norwood Library from 9am to 5pm on Saturday.
