Empty shop numbers in Streatham High Road have reduced dramatically in the past year.

Town centre manager Angelina Purcell said the number of void units had dropped from 82 to 30 in the past year.

She said: "We are the envy of other town centres that have struggled through the recession."

She said clothes shops, restaurants and eateries represented the majority of new businesses, and she would be looking to fill the remaining units with "quality independent" businesses.

She is also working with landlords to offer breaks for "pop-up businesses" like art galleries that could fill empty units for free or minimal rent while she helped landlords look for suitable long-term tenants.

Counting devices would also be employed to measure shopper numbers in Streatham High Road to make the area more "sellable" to potential businesses, and compare it to competing town centres, she said.

The camera-style devices can track movement, and provide statistics on the number of people who walk past a specific point.
