The owner of a Second World War baby’s gas mask is hoping to find it a new home in a museum.

Tony Churchill, 73, dug the mask out from his loft after seeing a similar one in the German tunnels in Guernsey recently.

It belonged to his sister, Sheila Hibbard, 67, who still lives in the family home in Lidiard Road, Earlsfield.

The mask, supplied by Wandsworth Council, required the baby to be tied in with string and supplied air using a pump.

Luckily the mask was never used, and has stayed in storage for 65 years.

Mr Churchill, who now lives in Sutton, said: “When I found the mask, it took me back many years. Memories started coming back of the war years and it felt very weird. It was like picking up history.

“I’d like to hear from any genuine historians who are interested in it. I think people would like to see what was around for children during the war.”
