A jilted 15-year-old has been found guilty of the double murder of his girlfriend and her sister.

Akmol Miah, from Thornton Heath, torched the Tooting home of Maleha Masud, killing her and elder sister Nabiha, 21, who was engaged to be married.

He enlisted the help of his cousin Shihabuddin Choudhury, 21, who drove down from his home town in Nottingham to help “get revenge”.

Miah, who attended Chestnut Grove school in Balham, can now be named after reporting restrictions were lifted at the Old Bailey today.

He was convicted unanimously of two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.

Choudhury, 21, was found guilty of all counts by a majority verdict of 11-1.

A third man Rasal Khan, 19, wiped away tears as he was was cleared on all counts.

Earlier, the court heard how Miah burnt the house after splitting-up with Maleha, barely a day earlier.

The family-of-five were asleep upstairs when petrol was poured through the letterbox at 4.30am on June 21 last year.

Maleha died four days after the arson attack from burns and smoke inhalation, while Nabiha - a South Thames College student who was to be married four months later - died a month after her sister from organ failure.

Their brother Junaid, 18, spent 45 days in intensive care following the attack, while eldest brother Zain, 24, and the family’s mother Rubina, 55, both escaped by jumping out of a bedroom window.

Outside of court Zain Masud thanked the police, Crown Prosecution Service and lawyers for their support and successful conviction.

He said while the verdict would not bring back his sisters and his family would suffer “from a life sentence without parole”.

Detective Chief Inspector Damian Allain, of the Metropolitan Police, paid tribute to the family and the community of Tooting which, he said, helped identify Miah.

He said: “I would like to thank the Tooting community and especially the youth community who came forward[with information].

“To lose two daughters in those circumstances is indescribable.”

Earlier the family's mother, Rubina, 55, told the court about the fire.

She said: “I looked around for my other children and couldn’t see them.

"I assumed Nabiha followed directly behind me but she was nowhere to be seen.”

Previously, the court heard the relationship between Miah and Maleha was the main reason for the murders and, the teenager rang the family home and threatened to tell Rubina Masud of the relationship.

Miah used the internet to search “how to burn someone's house” hours before the attack on the Tooting home, the court was told, and saved a photo of the burnt out house after the arson as has computer screensaver.

When arrested by police after Maleha's death Miah said, "I can't believe she died".
