Nick Carle has left Crystal Palace and joined Sydney FC on a free transfer.

The midfielder was former manager Neil Warnock's biggest signing having cost £1m from Bristol City two years ago but never reached the heights expected of him at Palace.

Despite making 41 appearances in his first season in SE25, Carle scored just four times and subsequently lost his place in the starting 11 to young Frenchman Alassane N'Diaye at the beginning of the last campaign.

He went on to make just 14 league starts and 26 appearances last season, scoring only once.

Despite having a year left on his contract, Palace agreed to let him leave for free in order to trim their wage bill.

Carle is expected to be followed out the exit door shortly by Darren Ambrose, who is in talks with QPR, while Julian Speroni has today been linked with Premiership sides Fulham and West Ham.
