A man who had just attended the funeral of his mother was seriously assaulted at her wake.

Police were called around 7:45pm on Thursday, May 20, by the London Ambulance Service (LAS) to reports of a man assaulted in Crispin Crescent, Croydon.

They found a 33-year-old man suffering from multiple injuries.

He was taken to a south London hospital where his condition is described as serious but stable.

Earlier in the day the victim had attended the funeral of his mother and was at an address in Mallison Road.

It was at the wake that the man became involved in an altercation with another man in the front garden of the house.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and information following the assault.

A 40-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.

He was taken into custody at a south London police station where he was later bailed to return to in late June pending further enquiries.

However, there are still a number of guests at the wake that left prior to police arrival, who have not spoken to officers.

Detectives are appealing for these people to contact them.

Detectives are also keen to speak to anyone that was in the Crispin Crescent or Mallison Road area at the time, either on foot or in a car, to contact them.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information that could assist police should call DC Mark Pearce at Sutton CID on 020 8649 0741 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
