The number of useful calls received by Surrey Crimestoppers went up by 16 per in the past year, figures show.

The role of Surrey Crimestoppers, a regional volunteer committee, is to encourage members of the public to contact the national independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously, with information about crimes and criminals.

Its principle measurement of performance is the volume of anonymous actionable packages sent to the police.

The charity said that in the past year it had worked with other agencies and partners, encouraging them to promote awareness of how Crimestoppers could reduce criminal activity in Surrey.

Surrey Crimestoppers received 30 per cent of the information via the internet and 70 per cent via the phone line.

Kevin Morris, chairman of Surrey Crimestoppers, said: “Firstly a huge thank you must go to the people of Surrey for passing on vital information about crime.

"We are extremely proud that the charity continues to play such a vital role in helping to make our local community a safer place to live.

"Secondly, we must thank all those organisations who have helped with publicising our call to action with us this year."

Suspected criminal activity can be passed on to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or visiting crimestoppers-uk.org.
