Young people have asked for a panel of their peers to represent them in the council chamber.

A group of youth advisors to Merton Council, who will speak to politicians about the key issues affecting young people, could be in place by October.

The decision to introduce the group - rather than a youth mayor or representatives from the borough’s schools and clubs - was made by Merton’s teenagers in the borough’s first youth referendum earlier this month.

The panel was the preferred choice of 41 per cent of the 1,594 voters taking part in the poll, which was held in youth centres and seven of the borough’s schools. The other two options each attracted just under a third of the votes.

The referendum took place from May 10 to 14. For more information visit merton.gov.uk/referendum.
