A church in Sutton has become one of five grade II listed places of worship in London to be given the latest £510,000 Heritage Lottery Fund announced this Monday.
St Barnabas, a church built between 1884-91 in Sutton was awarded £82,000 by the fund, which gave a total of £22.7 million to 222 historic places of worship this year under the Repair Grants for Places of Worship scheme.
Andrew Saidi, from the English Heritage, said: "St Barnabas met our top criteria of needing really urgent work on its roofs. The church is in a very poor condition. The roofs are leaking badly and as a result, internally there is a lot of water damage and loss of plaster in some places."
Sue Bowers, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in London, said: "Churches are often at the heart of the communities they serve and an important hub for local activities. Without continued investment for essential maintenance and repair work, precious buildings like these would not survive.”
