The Ahmadiyya Muslim youth from the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden have recently undertaken a litter picking campaign to clean up the streets in Merton.

Starting with the Alley way in the playing fields on London road, they targeted one particularly neglected area. Having taken advice from the local council, they where equipped with gloves, litter pickers, litter bags and high-visible jackets with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Motto of “Love for All Hatred for None” on the back.

The sessions took place on a monthly basis cultivating a real passion to clean up the surrounding area. Shoaib Ahmad who is heading this litter picking campaign stated, ‘There is no surprise on what you can find laying amidst in the fields and alley ways. Thus far we have found stray tyres, pushchairs, suitcases and the common one being glass bottles.’ Discussing the aims Shoaib explained ‘we hope that through this project we can further establish a relationship with the wider community surrounding our Mosque and help us to play a part in keeping our borough clean.’ Merton Council has played a huge part in supporting the Ahmadiyya Muslim youth and has also visited during these sessions. Pat DeJesus who is in charge of Merton Waste Management was pleasantly surprised to see the noticeable difference that had been made. The team of volunteers have looked at various other projects in Merton, but are welcome to suggestions on any potential cleanliness projects members of the local community feels needs to be tackled.
