Electronic warning devices allowing shop vendors and traders to instantly communicate with each other are being installed in shopping areas across Surrey.

Alertbox networks aim to help reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour, theft, or potential security threats, by allowing vendors to share important information quickly and be on their guard.

When one member of the network issues a warning about a particular issue, such as shoplifting or criminal damage, the message is instantly sent to all the other businesses on the local network.

Stoneleigh Broadway is one of the places where the box is being installed.

The devices, installed by Surrey Police, were piloted in two shopping areas in Hersham and Sunbury-on-Thames last year and proved effective at reducing the number of low level crimes.

Jamie Robinson, Force Crime Reduction Advisor, said: "Alertbox networks are about harnessing the power of the local community and getting people to talk to each other and share information.

"They serve as a quick early warning system and can help stop problems such as serial offenders who may go from one premises to the next.

"Police will continue to carry out their usual patrols and work with our partners and local tradespeople but what these devices do is provide a simple way for vendors to instantly alert each other about possible problems before they arise.

"The evaluation of the pilot locations concluded that not only did the network contribute to a reduction in the number of reported incidents but they were also fundamental in improving communication and building relationships between different businesses within the community."
