Shoppers in Epsom are being urged to ensure their handbags and money are always safe after an elderly woman had her purse stolen.

The 78-year-old woman had been shopping when her leather purse was taken from her handbag while she waited for a bus outside Wilkinsons in the High Street, last Thursday (May 20) between 12.45pm and 1pm.

She had used her purse to purchase flowers prior to going to the bus stop, placed her purse back into her bag and zipped it up. It wasn’t until she got off the bus that she realised the purse was missing.

It contained various store cards, debit cards and a small amount of money.

Detective Constable David Warner said: "I am appealing for the public’s help in catching this unscrupulous thief or thieves, who target the elderly and vulnerable.

"I would urge all residents and shoppers in Epsom to be wary of being approached by strangers and to ensure their valuables and handbags are secure at all times.

"It is easy to become distracted when you are out and about but I would urge people to always be aware of their surroundings and other pedestrians or shoppers who may be standing nearby.

"Please do not give thieves an easy opportunity to make you a victim of crime but if you have been the victim of such crimes, please report it to the police immediately so we can bring those responsible to justice."

Anyone with any information about this theft should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
