British Transport Police has teamed up with Southern to launch a new team of officers to crack down on anti social behaviour and disorder on trains and stations.

Four teams of rail neighbourhood officers, specialist accredited rail staff, will work side by side with BTP officers to reduce crime and the fear of crime at certain stations on the Southern network.

Among the stations being policed by the new teams are Ashtead, Banstead, Epsom, Epsom Downs, Ewell East, Kingswood, Leatherhead, Tattenham Corner and Tadworth.

The teams responsible for the local stations will be based at Purley and each team will work with a BTP constable overseen by an area sergeant and inspector.

Each RNO has passed a rigorous training course and have been given a range of powers including issuing fixed penalty notices for offences including trespass and graffiti, to deal with anti social behaviour and have the power to seize alcohol from underage drinkers.

BTP Assistant Chief Constable Alan Pacey said “This scheme ... will provide further reassurance for passengers.

“While we already have officers who tackle crime and passenger safety issues on trains and stations across London and the south these additional teams will act as a reassuring presence patrolling the line from London down to Brighton and along the south west coast.

“The teams will be tasked on a daily basis to patrol hotspot locations where anti social behaviour and low level disorder is reported and they will also be supported by other officers and specialist resources such as drug dogs when required.

“By having specific teams targeting dedicated line passengers can be assured of seeing a higher visibility presence across the Southern network which we believe will make great inroads in further reducing crime.”

Southern’s managing director Chris Burchell said: “The RNOs will provide a more visible, professional and reassuring presence on our trains and stations.”
