A Fairfield councilor has taken office as the new Mayor of Wandsworth.

councillor Piers Conolly McCausland, 61, was sworn in as the new mayor of Wandsworth at a ceremony in Wandsworth High Street on May 19.

The new mayor said: "Wandsworth is a diverse borough in terms of ethnicity and occupation and the role of the mayor is to unite people and make sure that they understand each other.

"I am only at the beginning of this exciting job and look forward to meet as many people as I can."

Coun McCausland first moved to Wandsworth in 1980. He was elected as a councillor in the former St John Ward in 1998 and a Fairfield councillor ever since the ward boundaries were redrawn in 2002.

The mayor added: "I have done a lot for Fairfield but becoming a mayor is a good opportunity to know more about other wards in Wandsworth and bring Fairfield closer to them.

"It will ultimately make me a better Fairfield councilor too."

During his career at the council he has served on a number of committees including housing, social services and licensing.

His main focus has been planning and he has previously held the post of deputy chairman of the planning applications committee.
