Surrey Police are urging motorists in Elmbridge to remain on their guard following seven reported thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles in the area.

One of the thefts occurred between midnight and 3.30am on Friday, April 9, in a car park in Pine Grove, Weybridge, when the catalytic converter and exhaust were stolen from a grey Lexus.

As well as the seven incidents in Elmbridge, there has also been two similar thefts in Runnymede and one in Spelthorne.

North Surrey crime reduction officer PC Mark Howells said: “It only takes a few minutes for a thief to crawl under your vehicle and remove the converter, which is then sold on.

"We are asking the community to play their part and let us know if you see anything suspicious or if someone attempts to sell you cheap scrap metal.”

Surrey Police said people should protect the catalytic converters in their cars by marking them with their name and contact details.

Anyone with information regarding thefts of catalytic converters should contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222.
