Spencer Collins admits Walton Casuals face an anxious wait to see if they gain a Ryman League reprieve after ending the season in the relegation places.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Leatherhead was not enough to haul the Stags out of the Division One South drop-zone.

But with rumblings of league restructuring, Collins is praying for a lifeline.

He said: “We still do not know what is going to happen.

“There are lots of rumours of only one side going down and hopefully that will be true.

“It is out of our hands and all we can do is wait.

“I am hoping we hear sooner rather than later as I doubt if I will be sleeping much.

“We have everything crossed.

“We have worked so hard to get to this level and it would be tragic if that was to go to waste.”

Casuals showed some fight in their weekend clash, taking the lead through Ashley Lodge before being pegged back.

But as the game wore on Leatherhead took control and Walton had to be content with a battling point.

Collins added: “It was a bit like the Alamo in the second half but I thought we deserved a point.

“We had players still putting their bodies on the line in the final minute and that was really pleasing to see.

“Six weeks ago we looked dead and buried but at least we have ended the season with a bit of form.”

Walton have also seen their ground development application pushed back to June by the FA.

And the Stags boss hopes for a double boost in the next couple of months.

Collins added: “The development will hopefully go ahead and we do not want to be in the Combined Counties league when that happens.

“Hopefully we will get that little bit of luck to keep us in this league and we can come back stronger next season.”
