Police are working with black taxis drivers to secure their cars after a series of smash and grab thefts.
Drivers are being urged to put up signs overnight saying “no valuables have been left in this vehicle” after five black cabs parked in driveways or the street in Wallington were broken into overnight on March 23 and 24.
Amanda Collins, an analyst who works in the Borough Intelligence Unit at Sutton Police station, came up with the initiative.
She said: “We want cab drivers to be aware of the need to be security conscious.
“We also want to deter opportunist thieves by making them realise that all property would have been removed from these vehicles.”
The initiative is due to be extended to mini-cab drivers following reports of a number of marked mini-cabs being broken into once they have been parked for the night.
