Two cyclists have won prizes for their bright ideas about improving cycling in Sutton.

Harry Raffaitin, 8, of Blenheim Close, Wallington, won a re-conditioned Raleigh Chopper bike after suggesting having separate traffic lights for bikes at junctions.

Winston Mahaffy, of Christchurch Park, Sutton, won the adult prize for his suggestion of secure bike lockers, instead of traditional bike sheds.

Mr Mahaffy won a Kryptonite security anchor worth £55, courtesy of Wallington Cycles, in the competition run by Sutton’s Safer Transport Team during their bike safety and security roadshow in Wallington Square on April 3.

During the roadshow, officers took photos of bikes and wrote the frame number on the reverse so cyclists had a personal record of their bike should their bike become lost or stolen.

Officers also recorded the frame numbers on a national property marking database and handed out crime prevention advice.

PC Dylan Kibble said: “We had around 80 entries and the winning ideas have been passed to Smarter Travel Sutton.”

Lee Parker, project manager for Smarter Travel Sutton, said: “Cycling is a hobby which we would encourage everyone to take up; it helps the environment, gets people fit and reduces congestion around the borough.

“We welcome any suggestions that will help more and more residents to get on their bikes.

“We hope our new campaign, Spring Into Action, will encourage an extra 20,000 residents to take up cycling this spring.”
