Merton police are aiming to knock on every single door in the borough in a bid to increase the force’s community presence.

The pledge comes as part of an initiative called Meet the Streets, to be launched next month, and is thought to be an undertaking unique among police forces across the country.

PCSOs and uniformed officers from each of the borough’s 30 safer neighbourhood teams (SNTs) will introduce themselves personally or leave a calling card providing the contact details of their local bobby or SNT at more than 80,000 properties.

Acting safer neighbourhoods and partnership Chief Inspector, Jim Cook, said: “We want to find out what people think of us and find out what they feel needs to be acted on in their community.

“Even though I’d say we already have a good relationship with most residents, there are a few out there who don’t know who or what their neighbourhood team is.

“It’s important for them to know what we’re about and what we can do to make Merton safer.

"That’s why we’re endeavouring to visit every single street in the borough and put a calling card through each door.”
