Two Sutton residents have donated post-war treasures and memories to a major Olympic exhibition being held in November.

The exhibition, to be held in Sutton Library’s Europa Gallery from November 8 - December 12, will showcase life in the borough during the last time London hosted the Olympic Games.

Barrie King, originally from Carshalton, was 12 when the Olympics were last in London and went to many of the sporting events.

Mr King picked up a number of valuable pieces of memorabilia, including programmes from the opening and closing ceremonies, cigarette cards featuring the sports stars of the day and stamps issued to commemorate the event.

Mrs Garland, from Cheam, was 15 when she took part in a torchlight procession celebrating National Savings week in 1948.

She said: “All the youths from the different scouts, cadets and guide groups in the borough assembled opposite Sutton train station and marched with torches down the high street to Sutton Borough Stadium. It was such a wonderful occasion.”

Colin Beech, of Sutton Council, said: “This exhibition will be a great chance for people to get a taste of what Sutton was like more than 60 years ago.“ For more information call Jane Howard on 020 8770 4297 or email lbshoneywood@btconnect.com.
