By community correspondent Ben Crespin Coming to the height of spring, the nights are getting longer, the grass is getting greener, the leaves are blossoming and the cider is beginning to become more prominent. All this is a clear reminder that summer is slowly springing upon us. And with the end of the football season in a typically enticing way, the cricket season is fast approaching.

What better way, I ask you, is there to spend a Saturday afternoon than down the local cricket club, beer in tow, with a few mates? Many cricket clubs are an integral part of the local community, bringing people together and providing a good source of entertainment. These are all reflected in the vast number of cricket clubs in the Surrey area. Where I live, Molesey, the cricket club is worthy of its reputation. Some say it is the second oldest cricket club in the world, with an ideal setting on the banks of the Thames, surrounded by greenery and always catching the evening sunset, it really is a wonderful place to go and spend some time - the play isn’t half bad either! The club has really thrived on the popularity it has been receiving in the past few years - a cafe has emerged which is always popular on a match day and even players from overseas have been attracted to Graburn Way.

Now, there aren’t many places in a small town like Molesey for people to interact and relax and the cricket club is a perfect distraction for youngsters and families - not only spectating, but also playing. The club runs teams right the way from U10 all the way through to a 4th team, for the aging members of the club who probably only go for the beer afterwards! But it does provide an excellent opportunity for young people to get into a sport and stay out of trouble, after all cricket is the gentleman’s sport.

So, as far as a good English pastime goes, cricket is the pinnacle, and with the summer rapidly approaching, I suggest you go and visit your local club to enquire!
