The man jailed last November for murdering Maureen Cosgrove has had his prison sentence increased to a minimum of 18 years.

George Maben, 46, from Morden, was originally sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 13 years, for the murder of the Carshalton Beeches resident on March 24 last year.

At the Royal Courts of Justice today, the Crown Prosecution Service appealed against the original minimum sentence, citing a lack of mitigating circumstances and the pre-meditational nature of Maben’s crime.

Lord Chief Justice said: “We have concluded there was a disproportionate reduction in the sentence available in this case.

“We shall order that the minimum term be increased to 18 years.”

John Cosgrove, Maureen’s son, said he was “delighted” with the result of the appeal.
