With the widely publicised Icelandic volcano causing European air transport to grind to a halt, it is not surprising that it has caused disruption to both local school teachers and pupils abroad, who are now trying to make it back to school for the start of term.
The effect on pupils at the Hollyfield School in Surbiton is that due to the huge disruption caused, all pupils from year 8 are not required to attend school until Wednesday. With students stranded in places such as Portugal and unable to get home, this measure is understandable.
The effect on other schools in Surbiton, however, seems to be far less serious, with Surbiton High School operating as normal with no extended leave for pupils or teachers, and a planned trip to the Isle of Wight still scheduled to go ahead. This is similar to Southborough School who will also begin the term on time with no extended holiday. Parents of students in year 8 who attend The Hollyfield School however do not need to worry, with Hollyfield being as larger a more expansive school than both Surbiton High and Southborough, these problems were to be expected. Children’s education will ‘not suffer in the slightest’ confirmed a Hollyfield School teacher and so parents and indeed students have no need for concern, the students of year 8 in the school certainly don’t, as they get an extra few days holiday.
