Pupils at a Wimbledon school have fallen victim to the flight freeze as their foreign trips are grounded by the Icelandic ash cloud.

About 50 13 and 14-year-olds from Wimbledon High School (WHS) have seen visits planned for this week postponed, while other schools struggled to keep classrooms open.

A WHS excursion to Salamanca in Spain and an exchange with pupils at a school in Munich, Germany, were both due to leave on Sunday - but with all flights to and from Britain grounded, pupils are back in lessons instead.

Meanwhile, a trip to France via coach and ferry has gone ahead as planned and a spokesman for the Mansel Road school said teachers were trying to rebook the other journeys.

Alison Jerrard, headteacher at Ricards Lodge school in Wimbledon, said some of her teachers and support staff were battling to get home but with the help of supply teachers, lessons were going ahead as normal.

Other public sector workers have also been affected, with one fireman normally based at Wimbledon fire station stranded abroad by the cloud.

A colleague said: “He’s stuck in Barcelona - I bet he’s gutted.”
