What are the environmental priorities of those seeking election and how do they see Wandsworth best adapting to the environmental challenge?

There has never been a greater need, or a better time, for the public to engage with politicians to push the green agenda.

Below we look at the green policies of those hoping to get your vote in the council elections on May 6.

Liberal Democrats

Liberal Democrats have led the campaign against Heathrow expansion, to prevent yet more noise and pollution in our skies and think the council should lead the way locally on promoting energy efficiency - for example by making smart meters available for hire at local libraries to enable consumers to better manage their energy needs.

With 20 per cent of households in the borough falling below thermal comfort standards, many of our pensioners can’t afford to heat their homes.

We would develop a new environmental strategy for the borough - and report back on progress and carry out a full audit of the borough’s carbon footprint.

Conservative

We would retain weekly collections and boost recycling rates from 25 per cent to a third of all waste. We would expand the Garden Partner scheme so more people can grow their own produce.

We aim to increase percentage of energy generated from renewable sources to 10 per cent and continue to oppose plans for a third runway at Heathrow and press for an end to night flights.

We will create 1,000 car club spaces across the borough and lobby the London Mayor to support the use of oyster cards on river transport from Putney and Battersea into the City.

Green Party

The Green Party puts the environment at the centre of its policies, and does not regard it as a tack-on extra. We want to keep the planet inhabitable for our children and their children, and realises that when the environment suffers it is the poor who suffer first and suffer most. While protecting sites of outstanding natural importance, we also believe it is important that people can enjoy and interact with the natural world locally.

We seek to prevent and reverse climate change, the peace issue of our time, by increasing the provision of renewable energy and using energy more efficiently.

Labour

On waste and and refuse we will extend the council’s recycling facilities with special attention to the difficulties of recycling for those who live in many of our estates. We will clean up our streets, especially in Battersea and Tooting.

Energy and climate change. We believe that human activity has been a threat to our environment and that it is our duty to save the world for our children and our children’s children. We are NOT climate change sceptics. Therefore energy saving and energy efficiency are not just economic benefits to hard-pressed taxpayers but also a vital part of our responsibility to the planet.
