A UKIP prospective candidate for Wallington North is running the Virgin London Marathon on April 25 to raise money for the London Wildcare Trust, based in Bedinton Park.

Phil Elliott, 46, from Elmwood Close, Wallington, operates a vehicle recovery company which has already raised money for the Trust by salvaging old cars and donating their scrap value to the animal centre.

He said: “The trust are local to me and are also reliant on donations and get no other real financial aid and in the present climate they are having a tough time with money.”

A spokesman for the London Wildcare Trust said: “We’re hugely grateful to Phil for all his hard work and we wish him a strong and successful run but our ambulances carry stretchers and oxygen so we’ll send one along just in case.”
