The MPs expenses scandal got most right-thinking people pretty angry but, to be honest, it only made me wistful.

Expenses, eh? Chance would be a fine thing – lunch with a contact here, a night out on the town there – but, as generous as my wonderful employers are (Are you being sarcastic? Ed), I am sad to report that this paper’s expenses budget is tighter than Jamie Redknapp’s trousers.

Therefore, I was delighted when a friend invited me into the hospitality lounge for the Huddersfield Town game.

Given the choice between my usual vantage point amid the salt-of-the-earth men and women of the terrace and the corporate world of prawn sandwiches, sparkling wine and moral bankruptcy, I chose the latter – and a thoroughly good time I had, too.

Without wishing to be unkind, Brentford and corporate sponsorship clearly make for the unlikeliest bedfellows since Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got together.

But, while I am sure that what the Bees offer is a million miles from Premier League glitz, I still had an enjoyable afternoon.

The Gus Hurdle Suite, or whatever it is called, is tucked away under the Braemar Road and, thankfully, on Saturday, the vast majority of guests appeared to be normal Bees supporters treating themselves for the day.

I missed the pre-match meal but the half-time refreshments of pies and beer went down well, and a post-match drink in the suite also allowed me to get involved in the man-of-the-match voting process.

The team’s performance, seen from a great vantage point on the halfway line, was wonderful as we swept aside a highly rated Huddersfield side.

This was reflected by the fact that all but one of the Brentford players received votes in the race for that coveted man-of-the-match prize – dinner for two at a hotel near Heathrow airport.

(In case you are wondering, it was right-back Danny Foster who, like Jemini at Euro-vision, received ‘null point’).

Although my vote went to Charlie MacDonald, I was pleased to see Carl Cort pick up the award. His return to the team has played a big part in our current run of good form, and the fact that Andy Scott is talking about offering him a new contract is good news as far as I am concerned.

I am already looking forward to cheering the big man on next season, from the Ealing Road terrace probably, unless of course there is anyone out there who wants to invite me for a little more hospitality.
