A flower arranging club’s 50th anniversary will be bittersweet when it is celebrated on April 19, because it also marks its end.

Esher Flower Club was formed in 1960 by ladies who met at the Horticultural Society.

Three of its original members, Kathy Hyde, Elizabeth Pritchard and Phyllis Whitehorn, remain active members until the very end.

Member Ann Mansfield, 65, said membership was at an all time low, because what was once popular pastime has become outdated.

The Weybridge resident said: “They used to be a big club but it’s not the in thing now. Most young members want to go home after work and do not have the time for a hobby.

“There’s a lot of talent there but it’s not working anymore. We are down to about 28 members and we can’t afford to keep going.”

Through the years, members, who meet monthly in Thames Ditton’s Our Lady of Lourdes, have won prizes at Hampton Court Flower Show and Chelsea Flower Show - among others.

But, that will all end at their 50th anniversary and farewell dinner on April 19, at Marquis of Granby, Esher.

Mrs Mansfield said: “We have loved doing it. It’s just a shame there’s no oomph behind it anymore.”
