Firefighters were called to battle two blazes in Broad Green this afternoon.

The emergency service responded to a number of calls from concerned citizens seeing plumes of black smoke from as far away as the centre of Croydon.

They were called to 420 London Road early this afternoon to put out the fire at City House.

They were then called to another fire on Campbell Road nearby.

Police have arrested one man they believe is linked to both fires on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

About 10 firemen and two fire engines were on the scene to put out the fires.

An employee at Mayday Hospital said: "I can see the black smoke from the window. It is not near the hospital.

"Worryingly I have not heard any fire engines go past."

Tyres are said to have been set alight and the council is warning people to keep their doors and windows closed.
