Petty theft and vandalism is destroying the hard work of a voluntary group whose members have been giving up their Sunday mornings to spruce up their local park.

The Friends of Westow Park group in Crystal Palace were devastated to discover the new flower beds it planted had been pillaged within days of being laid.

Thieves have dug up the bedding plants and left debris strewn on the grass and path after sneaking in and stealing the newly laid plants.

Cathy Henchion of College Green, Crystal Palace, is treasurer of the Friends of Westow Park, she said: “The flower beds were created by the Friends of Westow Park and there are no more funds to replace any that are missing or destroyed. It is the community that loses out.”

The group was set up in January 2009 to look after the park, keep it safe and inviting for the public and campaign for better facilities.

The new flowerbeds were designed by landscape architect, Sepideh Black, of Wakefield Gardens.

Mr Black said: “If people steal, nothing will remain to look good for spring.”

Despite the theft, the group is still determined to improve the green space and will continue to meet for gardening sessions.

Events in the park over the summer months are also planned, with a wildlife picnic taking place on May 9.

The group will also be taking part in the national Big Lunch event on July 18.

Commenting on the theft, Lalitha McLennan, the chairwoman of Friends of Westow Park, said: “It is disappointing but we just have to keep going.”
