Croydon businesses are being encouraged to return to the entrepreneurial spirit shown before the economic downturn.

Research from Barclays shows more than 10,000 new businesses were started in the borough between 2005 and 2007, with 12 per cent reaching a turnover of £100,000 within the two years.

The bank is offering firms the chance to win one of ten £50,000 prized when its ‘business bus’ takes to the streets of Croydon on April 21.

Its ‘Take One Small Step’ competition aims to find Britain’s best new business ideas, whether from an ambitious start-up or existing business looking to try something new.

Keith Fox, Barclays Business area manager for Croydon, said: “These figures show that many Croydon businesses are continuing to thrive despite the downturn.

“Through the 'Take One Small Step' competition we're hoping to give them a boost, but also help nurture great new businesses at the same time.”
