Kingston Council Elections 2010:
Would-be Conservative councillors in Chessington South have written to potential supporters apologising for ignoring them.
The letter, pushed through the doors today of people who have voted Conservative before, said: "In the recent past we have not done as much as we could have to communicate and seek your views.
"We are sorry and we aim to put this right."
But the attempt to re-engage supporters in the ward backfired after a mistake invited them to a meeting on Wednesday, April 17, at 6pm at the Hook Centre - a non-existent date.
Election organiser councillor Nick Kilby said the letter, from Tory candidates Michelle Akintoye, Colin Suckling and Maureen Rowley, was an honest mistake.
He said workers were going door to door to tell residents there was no meeting tonight and a date would be set later.
The letter also made clear that the party, which nationally has seen millionaire Lord Ashcroft as a major donor, is not seeking any financial contributions from attendees.
Chessington South has been a safe seat for the Liberal Democrats since the last election, returning three councillors including former deputy mayor Coun Shiraz Mirza in 2006.
