A major community festival is being held in Crystal Palace this summer to celebrate the arrival of the Tube to the area.

The yearly Crystal Palace Festival has been dubbed an“underground event" this year by organisers. It will take place on May 29, just six days after the planned opening of the area's East London Line station.

The festival will feature a number of bands, markets, and other entertainment in and around the Crystal Palace triangle.

A full line up is to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Organiser Andy Stem, who runs shop vintage shop Bambinos, said: "We have waited a long time to see the Tube arrive here, so we are throwing a party to celebrate."

He said he was keen for people to come forward to suggest ideas for the festival or get involved.

The East London Line, operated by Transport for London, will run north from West Croydon, through Crystal Palace, before terminating at Dalston Junction in east London.

The line will be part of London Overground - a network that allows travel by train around London without entering central London, but will connect to the Jubilee line, Hammersmith and City, line and District lines.
