When Sophie Bishop’s baby daughter began suddenly shaking and frothing at the mouth on Easter Monday the young mother thought she was about to lose her only child.

Miss Bishop, 26, felt “helpless and terrified” when 20-month old Nyla when she began to suffer the strange fit at their home in Hackbridge.

Her family called for an ambulance instantly, but police officers were on the scene first and put her in the recovery position before speeding her in their car to St Helier Hospital.

Miss Bishop and Nyla’s father Sam Liggins, 28, a recruitment consultant said PCs Jon Cockayne and Stuart Smith were “nothing short of heros” for helping save their baby who is now back to her normal self.

She said said: “It was my worst nightmare. It was terrifying, I felt absolutely helpfless.

“We had just returned from Tesco and she seemed tired, but it was around her dinner and sleeping time, so it wasn’t unusual.

“But then Sam felt her head and said she was was hot, so we took her upstairs to bed and gave her Calpol.

“She was lying on the bed when Sam shouted that something wasn’t right and she started shaking and couldn’t focus on either of us.

"I grabbed her and ran downstairs and we called the police.

"Sam was holding her and her head was all floppy, I thought I was going to lose her.”

PC Cockayne and PC Smith were on vehicle patrol near the girl’s home in Senga Road when they picked up the emergency call.

When they found the family PC Cockayne put Nyla in the recovery position and checked her airways and for any blockages while PC Smith updated medical staff at St Helier.

They then rushed Nyla, Miss Bishop and Mr Liggins in their police car to St Helier, reassuring them along the way.

Miss Bishop said: “They were brilliant, they were explaining what they were doing constantly and were so calm.

“I was panicking hugely, so if they had also panicked it would have made me worse, but they were just lovely.”

Insp Neal Tandy, who was in charge of the response officers on duty that night, said: “I believe the prompt and professional actions of these officers may have saved this young girl’s life.”
