The manager of a fast food chain has taken a tough stance on antisocial behaviour and is confronting the troublemakers himself.

When Mike Smith took over Sutton McDonald’s restaurant 10 months ago it was a source of frequent emergency calls to the police.

Mr Smith set about drawing the line on antisocial behaviour and refused to allow his staff to take abuse.

He now calls all the people who cause trouble into the restaurant to explain why their behaviour is disruptive.

Mr Smith said: “Rates of antisocial behaviour are very high in Sutton, it really is a problem.

“I want young people to be well behaved and well mannered, staff shouldn’t be shouted and spat at.

“I try to meet the boys and girls and find out what is causing the problem.

“I encourage them to get involved in sports they enjoy, rather than causing trouble.

“I speak to their parents if it’s needed and when I show them the CCTV footage of how their children behave they can’t believe it.”

Mr Smith offers computer-based education for staff, work experience and apprenticeships to those who never thought there would be a way into employment.

His current business consultant came from the shop floor all the way through into management.

Mr Smith said: “I’m trying to give young people an opportunity to learn skills in a business environment.

“Some people like to go into management after they have completed the training, which covers all kinds of things such as food hygiene and health and safety.”
