A personal trainer has devised a gruelling training for TV presenter Vernon Kay as he prepares for the London Triathlon 2010.

James Daly, of Cheam Road, Sutton, has been tasked with getting Mr Kay and Gordon Smart, The Sun newspaper’s celebrity news editor, fit prior to the August event.

The 26-year-old will not only be training his two charges but will also be taking part himself in the triathlon.

The event involves a punishing 1.5km swim in the River Thames, a back-breaking 40km cycle and finally a calf-sapping 10km run through London’s Docklands.

In preparation Mr Daly, who moved to Cheam 15 years ago, created a ‘Spartan challenge’ involving 300 daily exercise repititions or reps including deadlifts, pull ups, weight lifts, bench jumps and leg drops.

Mr Daly said: “I’ve been training Gordon since a Mount Kilamanjaro two years ago challenge so he’s got his fitness level up a lot since then.

“But Vernon hasn’t done anything since he did a Bolton cross country run in 1987 - over twenty years ago. So this a real challenge for me as a trainer and for Vernon as a competitor but I’ve put together a four month training schedule and he’ll be fine.”

But the Celebrity Family Fortunes presenter did not get off to the best start last week after he threw up in one of his first training sessions following a night out with rocker Noel Gallagher at the Royal Albert Hall.

On his personal blog, Mr Kay said: “Our personal trainer James was relentless even when I was yacking, so if I'm going to do this properly, beer consumption must be reduced.

"I assume he had a bad weekend and decided to take it out on us.”

But Mr Daly was impressed with the way he dealt with the setback. He said: “Vernon and Gordon decided to go for a last night out the night before the first session. But poor old Vernon was really suffering the next day as he doesn’t really drink that much.

“But he deserves a lot of credit for carrying on manfully and completing the workout.”

The personal trainer will be writing a weekly blog for the Sun website.
