An exhibition featuring historic paintings of the river Wandle has started in Honeywood Museum.

The ‘Painted Wandle’ display will illustrate the last 200 years of life along the river.

The exhibition includes oil and water colour paintings by local artists such as William Tatton Winter and Horace Man Livens, a friend of Vincent van Gogh.

Many of the paintings show the Wandle when it still flowed through rural landscape.

Highlights of the exhibition include paintings of the gardens of Carshalton House in 1780, which is now St. Philomena’s School and a stream flowing down Carshalton High Street.

Colin Beech, of Sutton Council, said: “This exhibition is a great opportunity for residents to see how much Sutton has changed over the years.

“Honeywood Museum is an excellent venue for this exhibition and thanks to the recent awarding of a Heritage Lottery Grant; it will continue to be an asset to the whole community.”

The exhibition is at Honeywood Museum by Carshalton Ponds until May 2.

The museum is open Wednesday-Friday from 11am-5pm and 10am-5pm on weekends Admission Adults £1.60 children 80p..
