A teenager collapsed in Croydon on Saturday and tragically later died in hospital.

Police said 15-year-old Jamie Blackwell-Lewis, who was from Mitcham, had been at the scene of a fight involving a relative in Bates Crescent, Waddon, when he unexpectedly fell to the ground.

He was taken by ambulance to Mayday Hospital in Thornton Heath after having breathing difficulties but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

A postmortem was held on Sunday but initial test results were inconclusive. Police are now awaiting the results of further toxicology tests in order to establish the cause of Jamie's death.

Officers were called to Bates Crescent at around 8pm on Saturday after Jamie collapsed. They say they are keeping an open mind as to what happened and are looking into whether Jamie attempted to intervene in the melee.

Three youths from Croydon were arrested at the scene and taken to a south London police station to help with officers with their enquiries.

They were later bailed to return to the police station in mid July.

Although the cause of Jamie's death has not been confirmed, police say they do not think it had anything to do with the fight in Waddon which is now subject to a separate investigation and instead are treating it as death by natural causes.

Detective Inspector Tim Evans of Croydon police said: "It is an unexplained death at the moment so the main focus now is, with the pathologist, to find the cause of death and to assist the family."

An inquest into Jamie's death was opened and adjourned at Croydon Coroner's Court yesterday (Tuesday).
