Police are appealing for witnesses after a Purley pensioner was punched and robbed just yards from his home.

The 72-year-old man was walking towards the entrance of his home in Azalea Court in Whytecliffe Road South at 6.30pm last Thuresday when he was approached by a man.

Police said the man punched the pensioner in the face, knocking him to the floor. The robber then stole a wallet containing cash and bank cards.

The robber is described as a black male, approximately 28 years of age and of medium build. He was wearing a black baseball cap and a brown body warmer over a checked shirt.

Detective Inspector Terry Wilson of Croydon police said: "This is an unusual area for this to happen and the victim is somebody who doesn't go out after dark, yet this happened in daylight."
