Break-dancing and body-popping are dance skills few can master.

But New York dancer and choreographer Bill Shannon takes the artform to gravity-defying new levels by using crutches to create his own brand of street dancing.

Dubbed The Crutchmaster' on the underground club scene, Bill Shannon has invented the Shannon technique for dancing with his walking aid, winning him acclaim from dance and disabled communities.

Now he brings his show to Croydon Clocktower, Katharine Street, on May 17 to showcases his hip hop-influenced street dancing using specially-adapted crutches and a skateboard.

Shannon was diagnosed with a degenerative hip condition when he was seven but, undeterred by his disability, he was soon using his crutches to dance and perform tricks, which he later turned into a street performance act.

Described as a "four-legged hip hop wonder" by one reviewer, Shannon has since become a renowned name in the hip hop dance and disabled artist community and his performance and video work has been shown at festivals all over the world.

Shannon will be treating Croydon town centre shoppers to a flavour of his show when he takes his unique brand of break-dancing to North End this Saturday.
