Croydon Clocktower's Braithwaite Hall played host to more than 200 guests at the launch of the latest exhibition at the Space C Gallery.

The Discover Islam exhibition explores the five pillars of Islam testimony, prayer, charity, fasting and pilgrimage and is organised by the Croydon Mosque and Islamic Centre and Croydon Council.

Artists Robert Aldous, Vanessa Hodgkinson, Dinah Kelly, Huda Totonji, Fatima Yazdi and Shabina Yousef offer an nterpretation of concepts with universal character and appeal.

The artists bring to life the belief structure and principles of an all encompassing lifestyle of a two million strong community integrated in Britain for more than two hundred years and more than a billion Muslims worldwide.

Alongside the exhibition visitors can see artwork created by pupils that took part in the Croydon schools' design-a-tile art competition.

The launch programme featured speakers from Croydon Mosque and sponsors from Muslim Aid and Islamic Relief. Croydon Mosque presented a £1,000 cheque to Brian Phillpott, chairman of Mayday Hospital towards Mayday children's fund.

Speeches were mingled with songs by children from Croydon Mosque and a performance by the Khayaal Theatre Company entitled The Truth About Your Father. Set in 2015, 10 years on from the July 7 bombings in London, an anxious Muslim mother and widow of a suicide bomber helps her troubled son come to terms with his father's haunting legacy. In an attempt to share her peace, the mother invokes Muslim stories shedding light on the intentions leading to her husband's crime.
