Cyclists from across the borough are invited to take part in a 36 mile ride to raise money for the Sutton, Croydon and District Spastics Society.

The marathon charity cycle ride, which will begin in south Croydon, takes place on Sunday, September 20.

All money raised through sponsorship will go towards the society, which provides much needed services for people with disabilities across Sutton and Croydon.

The challenge is open to both enthusiastic cyclists and those who want a fun day out.

Entries are welcome from individuals and teams from local groups and businesses and anyone who wants to enter the spirit of things and help raise money for the society.

Appeals co-ordinator Liam Mallon told the Guardian: "We'd love to see about 50 people in total and we've already had quite a few enquiries. We are aiming for anyone who takes part to raise about £50."

He added: "It will be a tough challenge but it will also be a good day. The ride takes in some beautiful countryside and it's up to the entrants what they want to get out of the day, whether as a serious race or a more fun race with fancy dress."

Prizes are up for grabs for the largest team entry and for the individual who raises the most money.

Support will be given to cyclists along the route by two backup vehicles and check points with light refreshments.

The Deputy Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Shafi Khan, will be starting the cycle ride in Melville Avenue, Croydon, at 10.30am.

Anyone who would like to take part, call Liam Mallon on 0181 681 0460 for an entry form.
