School dinners shook off the lumpy custard and sloppy semolina tag a long time ago.
Now the borough's main school catering service is making sure the images of grumpy dinner ladies heaping great ladlefuls of slop on to young pupils' plates are nothing but a distant memory as proved at a healthy eating open day recently.
The Croydon School Catering DSO event at Heavers Farm Primary School, Dinsdale Gardens, South Norwood saw an invited audience of teachers, governors and education officers finding out more about children's diets.
Demonstrations and stalls as well as a whole range of information was available explaining the requirements for a healthy and balanced diet.
Something which is vitally important when you realise that last year alone Croydon Schools Catering DSO prepared 3.25 million meals, with hungry youngsters munching their way through some 100,000 apples and oranges and around half a million portions of baked beans!
