Tuning up in the sunshine are the two Whitgift School upper sixth pupils who are leading a musical workshop for young children in the Sanderstead area. Joseph Goddard, who plays violin, and Nick Dyer, who plays clarinet, are hoping that the free project will inspire children with the creativity of music.

Four local schools are participating in the exciting afternoon of music for youngsters during the school holidays. The man behind the idea is Sanderstead resident Derek White.

"I created the event as part of a Landmark Education course on which I am a head coach. The course encourages participants to make a difference in their communities. I am committed to the project becoming a regular event, that will empower people in the community to realise their potential and be inspired by what they can achieve through music," he said.

Three primary schools, Atwood, Ridgeway and Gresham and Whitgift School are actively supporting this event. Nick Dyer and Joseph Goddard are giving up their free time to help organise this project.

Also involved in the project are Chris Scrivens, a local guitarist who works at Feline Music; Jon Reeve a local drummer; St Mary's parishioners and children from the primary schools.

Children from years four and five are welcome to attend this free event providing they have completed a place request form. There are only about 30 places left so act fast if you want to be part of the fun.

The Whitgift team will warm everyone up with a medley of numbers. Two, one-hour workshops will be interspersed with a 20-minute break. The event will culminate with a 10-20 minute performance by everyone involved.
