Journalists at the South London Guardian took three days of strike action this week in pursuit of their 2005-06 pay claim.

The local chapel of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) is seeking a pay rise for its members of six per cent in addition to changes to terms and conditions.

Management has offered three per cent, backdated to April 1. Managing editor Jo Gumb said: "Newsquest South London is disappointed that after seven months of consultation, the NUJ felt it necessary to recommend strike action. We are bringing out all our newspapers and endeavouring to ensure readers and advertisers receive their normal top-quality local paper."

Don Mackglew of the NUJ said: "We went to ACAS to resolve the issue. We wanted to see if they could improve on the offer of three per cent, which so far has not been forthcoming."
