Up to 2,000 people in Croydon could have diabetes but be unaware of it, according to the primary care trust.

The trust is raising awareness of the symptoms of diabetes which include, increased thirst, fatigue, blurred vision and headaches.

Currently, there are 13,500 people in Croydon who are known to have the disease but the trust believes there could be more. It is also urging people who know they have the disease to receive regular eye screening for a condition called retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that affects the retina.

Eye specialists using digital cameras carry out screening and treatment at Mayday Hospital.

At present, 60 per cent of people with diabetes receive regular screening.
