Your correspondent R Tingle couldn't be more wrong when suggesting that the council is not concerned about the collection of council tax (Croydon Guardian, July 6).

Although our past performance was not acceptable we have now moved on.

The revenues operation has been restored in-house so that we can run a better and more efficient service.

In addition we are implementing a tough recovery plan to recoup outstanding debt.

Anyone who wilfully refuses to pay council tax will find we can be very persistent and determined to ensure that law-abiding taxpayers are not obliged to subsidise freeloaders.

R Tingle is also wrong to say the council is "pushing through intensive housing projects".

Planning applications are properly considered on their merits in accordance with fully accountable policies.

Croydon, as a key centre in the South-East, with its excellent access, high-achieving schools and abundance of jobs, is an attractive and popular place in which to live.

Demand for affordable housing remains high and we need to ensure we make the most effective use of available land.

However, as a green council we will continue to balance housing need with environmental responsibility.
