London's successful Olympic bid has boosted the proposed London Underground East London Line extension and the Tramlink extension to Crystal Palace.

Preparation work on the extension of the East London Line, which will bring the Tube to West Croydon, has already begun and Ken Livingstone has said construction work will begin next year with a completion date set for 2010.

With Crystal Palace National Sports Centre tipped as a possible training venue for athletes, the need for an extension of Croydon's tram network to Crystal Palace has also been highlighted.

Charles King, deputy chairman of the London Transport Users Committee, has welcomed London's successful bid and hopes the news will see the extension of the Tramlink given the go ahead.

He said: "I think winning the bid is fantastic. It will bring forward investment to the transport system as a whole and bring forward investment for the extension of the East London Line, which will benefit West Croydon.

"I think it will also help the cause for the extension of the Tramlink to Crystal Palace and assist it no end."

Theo Spring, marketing executive for South London Partnership, also hopes the successful bid will see the extension of the Tramlink given the green light.

She said: "We hope the Tramlink extension is given the go ahead, not only will it improve transport links in time for the games, but well into the future.

"We are delighted the bid was successful and there is sure to be a knock on effect and will give many people the opportunity to participate in the games."
