Charlton athletic 1
Crystal Palace 2

Crystal Palace face a mouth-watering Carling Cup fourth round tie at Old Trafford after an impressive victory over Charlton at the Valley last week.

Hungarian striker Sandor Torghelle scored his first goal for the club and then saw red in what was a surprisingly comfortable win for Palace, despite Iain Dowie making 10 changes from the side that had beaten West Brom the previous Saturday.

Charlton started the game the brighter and went into an early lead when former Eagle Hermann Hreidarsson powerfully headed home a Danny Murphy corner.

But the expected onslaught from the Addicks never came and Palace started to assert their authority.

Good shots from Derry and Watson tested Charlton keeper Dean Kiely and Palace's pressure was eventually rewarded just before the break.

Dougie Freedman superbly curled in the equaliser after he latched on to a loose ball from 12 yards.

Torghelle scored what proved to be the winner on 54 minutes when the powerful Hungarian chested down a chipped throughball by Derry, and swivelled round to unleash an unstoppable left-footed shot from 20 yards.

But Torghelle, already on a yellow for an earlier foul on Charlton defender Chris Perry, received his marching orders 16 minutes later when referee Rob Styles adjudged that the striker dived in the box.

Palace boss Iain Dowie was delighted with his side: "The lads I picked for the match deserved their place.

"I take the competition very seriously and all the changes show how highly I value my squad members."
