Residents of a quiet New Addington cul-de-sac have been rocked by violence for the second time this year after a man was found knifed in the street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Philip Whyte, in his late 20s, later died in hospital after he was found with stab wounds in Bygrove at around 2.30am on Sunday, September 5, just a few hundred yards from Applegarth Infant and Junior School.

He was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Farnborough, where he later died, and a post mortem was held at the hospital on Sunday.

The incident comes seven months after the murder of 37-year-old Derek Hamilton, who was stabbed by his cousin during a row in Bygrove in February.

On Friday, September 2, Mr Hamilton's 35-year-old second cousin Christopher Kiffin was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Old Bailey for his murder.

As a police officer stood guard outside one of the flats in Bygrove on Monday, stunned residents tried to make sense of what had happened.

Marilyn Smithies, secretary of the Fieldway Residents Association, said: "I was horrified when I heard. This isn't good for the people who live on the estate. I'm shocked."

Police have opened an incident room at Lewisham police station under Detective Chief Inspector Phil Adams from the Specialist Crime Directorate (South). Anyone with information should call 020 8721 4868 or Crimestoppers, free and anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

l Unemployed Nicola Ann Gale, aged 20, of Bygrove, New Addington, appeared in custody before Croydon magistrates yesterday (Tuesday) charged with the murder of Philip Whyte on September 5.
